As most of the world's religions, the historical development of Islam has had a clear impact on the political history, economic and military areas inside and outside what is considered its main geographical areas of coverage (see Islamic world). As with Christianity, the concept of an Islamic world may be more or less useful to see different periods of history. One strand of Islamic culture encourages identification with the quasi-political community of believers, or Ummah, and this component will be reflected in the behavior of a variety of actors in history. The history of Islam as a religion is closely related to political history, economic and military.
Islam arose in Arabia in the seventh century of the Christian era with the appearance of the prophet Muhammad. A century after his death, the Islamic state stretched from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to Central Asia in the east. This rule is not held together for a long time, the new system of government soon led to a civil war known to historians as the Fitna Islam, and subsequently hit by a Second Fitna. After this, rival dynasties claimed the caliphate, or leadership of the Muslim world and many Islamic states and empires offered only a symbolic allegiance to the Caliph, unable to unify the Islamic world.
Despite this fragmentation of Islam as a political community, the Abbasi Caliphate empires, the Mughal Seljuk and Ottomans were among the biggest and most powerful in the world. The Arabs made many centers of Islamic culture and science which were notable scientists, astronomers, mathematicians, physicians and philosophers during the Islamic golden age of Islam. Technology flourished, there was little investment in economic infrastructure such as irrigation systems and canals. The emphasis on the importance of reading the Qur'an produced a high level of literacy in the general population.
Later, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Islamic regions fell under the influence of the powerful European empires. After the First World War, the remnants of the Ottoman Empire were divided as European protectorates.
After many centuries, there is a large and widely accepted claims of the caliphate (which had been reclaimed by the Ottomans at least).
Although affected by various ideologies such as communism, during much of the twentieth century, Islamic identity and the prominence of Islam in political issues have almost certainly increased during the last years of the twentieth century and the beginning of the XXI. The rapid growth of interest in the Islamic West, international conflicts and globalization have influenced the importance of Islam in shaping the world of the twenty-first century.
