Founded in 1986, The Brain Trauma Foundation (BTF) develops research on traumatic brain injury (TBI). The foundation's mission has expanded to improving the outcome of TBI patients nationwide through: Working to implement guidelines for prehospital and in-hospital care, developing quality-improvement programs, and coordinating educational programs for all medical professionals. The mission of the Brain Trauma Foundation has become to improve the outcome of TBI patients the world over.

The BTF has a number of famous and successful individuals who volunteer of their own time, thse include Jamshid Ghajar, M.D., Ph.D., President, investment manager and financial analyst, a Director of Acerno, Alan Quasha, Chairman, clinical psychologist Pamela Drexel, Exec. Director since 2001, investment banker Hassan Nemazee, and actress Sarah Jessica Parker. Alan Quasha, of Carret Asset Management LLC, and Hassan Nemazee are both involved in much philanthropic and volunteer activity, as are Parker and Drexel.

The Guidelines for the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury developed by the Brain Trauma Foundation have been endorsed by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the World Health Organization Neurotrauma Committee, and the New York State Department of Health. These important guidelines have been distributed to all US neurosurgeons.
